What is laser tag?
Laser tag, also known as laser skirmish, is a fun interactive game where participants get into groups and use infrared lasers to target opponents.
How does laser tag work?
The aim of the game is to gain as many points as you can. Each player has a laser gun and wears a vest with sensors on, these sensors are what you need to target, but make sure you’re only zapping players on the opposite team!
The players will be allowed to spread around the arena before the game starts, most laser tag arenas are dimly lit and full of obstacles/things to hide behind. Once the buzzer goes, each vest will activate and the game will start – follow the rules, use our tips below and you’re almost guaranteed to walk out of there with the most points for your team.
Laser tag rules
The rules for laser tag are fairly simple, but must be followed to ensure that the game is played as safely as possible. Below are some of the most common rules to follow:
- Wear appropriate footwear (no thongs, sandals or high heels)
- No offensive language
- Do not run
- No crawling, jumping or climbing
- Be a minimum age of 6 years old
- Do not be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other substances
- Be cautious that arenas have flashing lights and may not be appropriate for those who suffer with Photosensitive epilepsy.
At Timezone, we give you a run-down on the specific rules for the game and make sure everyone has a clear understanding of how to play before the competition starts!
Laser tag tips for beginners
- Learn the layout of the arena
If you can, get a gist of how the laser tag arena is laid out before the game, this will allow you to know your way round and find the best spots for occasionally hiding for a break and for sneakily zapping opponents.
- Focus on your aim
It is easy to get caught up in the rush in the moment and aim your laser gun at the completely wrong part of the vest. Hold the gun with both hands and be ready to aim at the sensors on the vests of the opposite team. You’ll be surprised how many players miss out on points because of poor aim!
- Spread out
Players on the same team often end up congregating in the same area, but this can be a bad technique as opponents can aim at you all at once! Cause some confusion and catch out the other team by spreading out and utilising as much of the arena as you can.
- Keep moving
Try not to stay in one spot for too long – once players know where you’re situated they will know how to target you. Find a few good areas in the arena to move to and from.
